I favor soft mobility and public transport: Mulhouse and its region are well connected, so I can take advantage of the bus, tram, tram-train, train and Citiz (car sharing) network! I can also rent a bike and use the cycle paths and lanes, or walk. It’s good for your health, and maps are available from the Tourist Office!
If I choose to drive my car, I can optimize the trip by carpooling, choose my vehicle’s eco mode, and/or lower my speed: driving at 110 km/h instead of 130 means -20% emissions, it’s good for my fuel budget, and it won’t upset my day’s schedule!
I limit my waste: Mulhouse’s water is naturally good to drink, so all I have to do is fill up my water bottle. When shopping, I pay attention to product containers and use my own bag.
I sort my trash: of course I don’t throw anything out in parks, nature or the street! In my accommodation, my hosts will explain, if necessary, how recycling works.
I watch my energy consumption: I turn off lights, I don’t leave chargers plugged in all night, I use air conditioning sensibly (no need to be at 18°C, the recommended difference between outside temperature and air conditioning is 5 to 7°C maximum). I also moderate the heating. In winter, it’s perfectly seasonal to wear sweaters, indoors too!
I reduce my water consumption. I can also sing somewhere other than in the shower!
I do my shopping by privileging local food networks: to get food, I can go to the market. I choose local producers, and if they’re organic then bingo! Plus, it’s always nice to chat with them. A map of local producers is available from the Tourist Office.
For my souvenir gifts, I choose items made in Mulhouse or made in Alsace. There’s no shortage of designers and artisans around here!
At the restaurant, I eat local and seasonal (and for that I chose the address well on the advice of my favorite Tourist Office!).
PS: world cuisine can also incorporate local products
I opt for environmentally-friendly activities: hiking, cycling, visiting tourist sites and museums… I stroll and take time for myself.
I get to meet the locals: the natives are friendly. I can take a walk with a greeter to discover Mulhouse and its region!
And I enjoy it all! I take my time, because you’re here to discover and enjoy yourselves … and that’s not at odds with the recommendations for sustainable tourism, quite the contrary!
