Laëtitia Pitz draws on Sophocles’ *Antigone* as rewritten by the Canadian poet Anne Carson. In a text where the gods no longer intervene in the course of history, Antigone’s fate is made all the more poignant because it resonates with us—spectators of this turbulent 21st century—raising the only question that matters: how can we remain true to our humanity when doing so puts our lives at risk?
With *Antigonick*, Laëtitia Pitz brings to life a figure who is at once archaic and modern, radiating a singular clarity. The story is set neither in a mythical past nor in a distant, exotic land. Behind the conflict between Creon and Antigone, it allows us to see and hear a more intimate story—that of a family torn apart from within by the violence of power. Antigone, who persists, against all odds, in burying her dead, represents in this sense the indomitable bonds that unite us with one another beyond the rationalized demands of human society. On stage, three actresses tell this story, constantly shifting from one role to another. At the same time, the musical score conceived by Norwegian composer Christian Wallumrød navigates between echoes of early music and bursts of electronic sound, creating a composition that is both elegiac and visceral, carrying the text forward while also charting its own course.
