Symphony Concert: The Metamorphosis of Destiny

Three post-Romantic works that convey a full range of emotions, from paradise to songs of farewell. All three were composed in the 1890s and share the same passionate and generous post-Romantic spirit; one might expect them to be similar. But this is not the case: the young Scriabin’s “Rêverie” touches on paradise, his Piano Concerto transports us with its virtuosity and playful spirit, while Tchaikovsky plunges into the depths, composing his musical testament: he died nine days after conducting the premiere in Saint Petersburg, presumably by suicide. After three movements that attempt to ward off fate, the finale is the most beautiful farewell song ever written for an orchestra.
