Description

The South African choreographer, performer, and visual artist’s visit to La Filature is a major event. Steven Cohen sums himself up with these words: “I am white, Jewish, and queer”—words that must be viewed in the context of the realities of apartheid-era South Africa, where his work is rooted, exploring “the flaws and graces of humanity.” In this fragmented self-portrait, the audience becomes the artist’s partner, mirror, and witness in what amounts to an inventory of his work. By revisiting the spectacular images that have shaped his public persona—his candlestick-like body, his face with butterfly wings, his sky-high heels —Steven Cohen reenacts images from childhood, the shadows of adolescence, his family legacy, and the wounds of apartheid… Echoing the performances that have marked art history, the piece is permeated by the figures of those who have passed away—his brother, his partner, his mother—and by feelings of guilt, love, and atonement. Attentive to marginalized experiences, Steven Cohen explores how identity is constructed, projected, and either affirmed or undermined under the gaze of society. He also addresses the issue of aging, a rare theme in the performing arts. He embraces slowness, pain, and fragility, transforming his presence into an act of resistance. For ages 14 and up. From 6 bis 30 €
