The museum tells the story of an exciting adventure, that of electricity. It begins in antiquity, crosses the centuries with many experiments, discoveries, theories and inventions… until today when everything is electric.
Participate in experiments as they were practiced in the 18th century and observe strange phenomena, to make your hair stand on end! Let yourself be seduced by the multimedia show of “the great machine”, a jewel of Mulhouse’s industrial history. At the origin of the museum’s creation, the Sulzer-BBC alternating current generator had been installed in 1901 by the DMC factory.
The collection was then expanded to more than 12,000 objects, of which a thousand are presented in the permanent exhibition. You will find both objects related to the scientific discovery of electricity and its industrial applications, from electrostatic machines to generator sets, as well as objects from the domestic sphere that illustrate the radical transformations that have taken place over the past century in the areas of comfort, food preparation, communication and audiovisual… It’s often very unusual!
In the “An Electric Future” space, step into a new era to discover the links between electricity, climate and the new lifestyles of the 21st century.
Especially for children, you will find games, experiments, videos to understand how a battery, a light bulb, a motor work, to know what happens when the current flows…
The Garden of Energies allows you to discover an exceptional electrical heritage such as the turbine of the Fessenheim power plant and Tomi Ungerer’s Wheel of Energies. And thanks to an outdoor layout and a fun trail, try to revive sleeping objects.
