On a movie set, a film about Carmen is being prepared. Through a series of rehearsals in this enclosed space—transformed into a living laboratory—Carmen, the Mediterranean woman, comes to life. Elusive, free, fiery, she speaks for free women—those who are watched, judged, and feared, but who cannot be confined.
Firmly rooted in the present, this production takes the form of a hybrid opera, based on a story within a story. A director is preparing a film about the young, rebellious, and seductive gypsy woman. In this artistic laboratory, through rehearsals, improvisations, and camera tests, the characters emerge. They reclaim Mérimée’s words—sometimes ambiguous, sometimes violent—and fiction spills over. Carmen comes to life, a rebellious figure and a diva. Drawing on Bizet’s famous arias, Camélia Jordana crafts arrangements that engage in dialogue with flamenco, Arab-Andalusian and North African sounds, gospel, soul, and rap. All these musical styles—which speak to struggle, freedom, and the beauty of chaos—serve the narrative. The lyrical fragments blend with a rhythmic and percussive composition—featuring electronic textures, a cappella passages, loops, and samples—in a free dialogue between traditional heritage and contemporary musical composition.
