What if filial love were, after all, not unconditional, but a love subject to conditions—a modestly precarious contract that may or may not be subject to repayment?
A free adaptation of *King Lear* by author Magali Mougel, *C’est la fête* tells the story of Denys and his mother, Elie. It all begins with the announcement of a family celebration centered around the grandfather, a former butcher who is now ill. This invitation reawakens a traumatic past in Elie—one marked by silent domestic violence, a childhood dominated by her father’s authority, forced labor, and then the death of her own mother. Elie bears the weight of what remains unsaid. As a single mother, she struggles to protect Denys from this toxic legacy. According to Magali Mougel, gifts and debts constitute a kind of specter, a powerful sword hanging over our heads. Thus, drawing on Shakespeare’s tragedy, she has worked—in a palimpsestic process—to uncover, layer by layer, how this work speaks to us today. King Lear and its plot serve as a critical tool for analyzing the tragic history that, in our society, binds us all to the burden of debt.
