Inspired by a ballad by Goethe and made famous by *Fantasia*, the Walt Disney animated film in which Mickey Mouse plays the sorcerer’s apprentice, Paul Dukas’s symphonic poem sets enchanted brooms dancing: they pour out the waters of the Rhine until they threaten to engulf the poor boy who brought them to life, all to spare themselves the trouble. In the Symphonie fantastique, it is spectres and witches who dance in the nightmares of a young musician who has turned to opium in a fit of romantic despair—it is not hard to recognize Berlioz himself in this.
