In the face of terror, what can we do despite our fear and sense of powerlessness? A fusion of the versions by George Sand and Alfred de Musset, the play chosen by David Bobée for his new production raises a question that is all too relevant today: that of action versus inaction in the face of political danger.
With *Lorenzaccio*, David Bobée continues a creative direction born of his desire to infuse the masterpieces of the repertoire with the most contemporary aesthetic and narrative styles. This allows us to benefit from the unifying power of these works, characters, and stories, thereby contributing to the sharing of a common culture. By exploring the duty to resist and individual and societal responsibility, this production returns to the original plot: the action takes place in Florence in January 1537. Lorenzo de’ Medici, a studious yet fragile young man, dedicates himself to restoring the Republic. The task is difficult, for his distant cousin, Duke Alexander de’ Medici, rules Florence as a tyrant with the support of the Holy Roman Empire, the Pope, and an armed guard. Against a backdrop of unfinished or destroyed columns, a drama unfolds whose relevance to the present day is painfully clear.
