During European Heritage Days, follow in the footsteps of Alsace’s mining past on a guided walking tour offered by the Mining and Potash Museum. In conjunction with the exhibition “The Lost Shafts of Thomas Ermel,” explore the Joseph-Else mining site, its slag heap, and the former Amélie I shaft. Even where the mining facilities have disappeared, the landscape still bears the marks of a century of potash mining: it’s up to you to learn how to spot and interpret them. The tour features two narrators. A former miner will share his memories and experiences of these once-active sites with you, while an engineer from DREAL will take you behind the scenes of post-mining operations: monitoring of former shafts, residual risks, and measures put in place to secure these sites. A walk through personal accounts, industrial heritage, and landscapes that offers a fresh perspective on the potash basin and reveals how its history continues to unfold, even when its shafts are no longer visible.
