Description
In Guadeloupe, proverbs enrich conversations with their evocative power, suggesting a sensitive way of experiencing the world by emphasizing imagery and poetry. Sibylline continues to explore Léo Lérus’s Guadeloupean heritage by drawing on this “living foundation,” which is in a state of constant transformation.
The Creole proverb “Pawòl anba fèy pa ka pèd” (“words beneath the leaves are not lost”) inspires the choreographer. Suggesting trust, patience, and continuity, it conveys the idea that words, even when hidden or whispered, never disappear completely. They remain in the collective memory, buried like seeds beneath leaves, ready to sprout at the right moment. Thus, legacies do not disappear: they shift, transform, and adapt to the present. It is within this dynamic that *Sibylline*, a new choreographic work for nine performers, finds its place. Blending contemporary choreography with Creole roots, the piece evokes echoes of gwoka and Léwòz—forms deeply rooted in Caribbean history and traditions—which are brought to life by the words of slam poet Dory Sélèsprika. Beneath the leaves, what we discover are not relics, but a field of possibilities brimming with energy!
For ages 10 and up.
