Zoe Heselton, a British-born poet, songwriter, guitarist, and singer based in Strasbourg, is joined by five female musicians she has met over the years. The magic happens with this “incandescent folk,” somewhere between a shamanic ritual and a cry of love for a battered life.
Influenced by traditional music, folk, blues, and flamenco, spoken-word poetry, and a multitude of eclectic and experimental influences, Zoe Heselton’s music is vibrant and intimate. Her voice is deep and measured; her electric guitar playing is incisive and sensitive. Balancing vulnerability and power, she tells stories of darkness and healing. By turns melodious and dissonant, her songs are litanies—poems of tenderness and rage. With her Sisters—who draw from worlds as diverse as free jazz, noise, and post-punk—she blends contemporary sounds (electric guitar, bass) with traditional ones (tanbur, Ottoman-Turkish long-necked lute, hurdy-gurdy, cowbells). Blending traditional, experimental, fringe, and improvised music, they evoke a unique, poetic, and sincere world at the intersection of these different musical genres.
