Beethoven, Sonata in D major Opus 12n1
César Franck's Sonata in A Major
Beethoven's first sonata for violin and piano is an early work, written around 1798, when he was 28, at the same time as his famous Pathétique sonata. It is dedicated to his teacher Antonio Salieri, and is in pure Mozartean style, with a brilliant first movement, a theme and variations second movement, and a joyous 6/8 finale.
Franck's sonata, on the other hand, was written at the end of his life, in 1886, at the age of 64. This very famous sonata, with its many themes and cyclical form, presents a beautiful balance and dialogue between the two instruments.
It is dedicated to the Belgian violinist Eugène Ysaÿe, and inspired Marcel Proust in his novel À la recherche du temps perdu.
It comprises four movements.
