In a talk, René Tessier presents the industrial adventure of Peugeot, a story that spans more than 200 years.
The automobile is not a consumer good like any other. We buy a refrigerator or a TV set with the aim of obtaining a good price-performance ratio, but for a car, depending on the purchaser, we're looking for something extra, encompassing aesthetics, well-being, even sporting performance and sometimes the enhancement of its owner.
The automotive industry in Mulhouse is no ordinary affair. It's an industrial adventure that's been going on for 60 years (the gearbox factory opened in 1962), and has involved tens of thousands of employees and more than a hundred thousand people if we consider the families of the previous owners and the employees of the surrounding economy.
The Peugeot adventure began in the Montbéliard region over two hundred years ago. It began with the manufacture of tools and a wide range of consumer goods, before taking part in the beginnings of the automobile.
Perhaps most remarkably, this industrial adventure has been linked to a family history spanning more than 8 generations since 1810. This is an exception in the industrial world.
The future will tell whether the Peugeot family will still have a role to play.
