Éric Anceau, professor of contemporary history at the University of Lorraine, author of numerous works on French, European and world history, on the State, powers and societies, including "Laïcité, un principe de l'antiquité au temps présent" (2022) and "Nouvelle histoire de France" (2025).
French secularism, the central principle of the republican framework, must be seen as a legal principle, a historical legacy and a framework for civic coexistence. A review of the political, social and philosophical conditions that led to its development highlights the driving role played by the Third Republic, as well as the structuring impact of the 1905 Law of Separation. This perspective sheds light on the way in which a specifically French conception of the neutrality of the State and freedom of conscience gradually took hold. The study of the evolution of the principle of secularism, from legislative adjustments in the 20th century to contemporary debates, also leads us to question the challenges to be met in an increasingly diverse and plural society.
Éric Anceau will be signing his latest works at the Bisey bookshop between 4:30 and 6pm, and at the Musée Historique after his lecture.
Reservations recommended by phone or email. Only in French.
