Guided tour of the production greenhouses and conservatory of the City of Mulhouse

The Nature and Green Spaces Department opens the doors of its production greenhouses and Municipal Botanical Conservatory, a unique place in France.

Within the botanical conservatory, numerous endangered plant species are carefully preserved. These plants, treasures of the Alsatian flora and beyond, hold promise for the future, whether in the fields of health, food or ecosystem balance. This historic site, founded in 1985 by botanist J-P. Reduron, works every day to ensure the survival of species through ex situ conservation, a science of preservation reminiscent of large-scale animal protection programmes. Every seed preserved and every plant cultivated here represents hope for future generations.

The city's production greenhouses reveal a thriving world where more than 90,000 plants are grown each year, from bright annuals to delicate grasses, destined to beautify the parks and gardens of Mulhouse. Behind this profusion of colours lies an exemplary environmental approach. Cultivation methods are evolving to preserve natural resources and reduce the carbon footprint by limiting the use of peat, gradually replacing chemical fertilisers with organic fertilisers and experimenting with the use of hardy local plants.

This tour offers a behind-the-scenes look at a discreet but essential commitment, where innovation is at the service of nature and where every plant grown contributes to preserving the beauty and balance of the living world.
