Exhibition: Déborder la rivière

Did you know that the Ill is one of Alsace's main rivers, crossing the region from south to north for almost 220 kilometers? It rises in the foothills of the Jura, flows along the Vosges, through Altkirch, Mulhouse and Strasbourg, before joining the Rhine. Sometimes tamed, sometimes left to run wild, this discreet river has nevertheless given its name to Alsace (Ill-sass) and embodies a strong link between nature and culture. It prompts us to reflect on the way we live with natural elements, their place in our lives and their role in the balance of ecosystems.

The "Déborder la rivière" exhibition offers an artistic and sensitive approach to this reflection. It considers the Ill not simply as a watercourse, but as a living being, linked to uses, species and territories. The works presented, whether in the form of sculptures, videos, paintings or installations, explore this network of interactions between the river, its inhabitants and its surroundings. Each creation is an invitation to observe, listen and understand in a new way what connects us to our environment.

Eleven contemporary artists, including Carolina Caycedo, James Webb, Guillaumit, Angéline Dubois, Encastrable (Antoine Lejolivet & Paul Souviron), and the duo Marie Ouazzani & Nicolas Carrier, offer a personal and committed vision of the link between water and living things. Some have worked directly with the Ill, others with other rivers, but all question our relationship with these often invisible, yet indispensable, environments.

When you visit this exhibition, you'll discover a river brimming with meaning and stories, a living space that teaches us a different way of inhabiting the world. It's an artistic and ecological experience, both local and universal, that invites us to rediscover the Ill with fresh eyes.
