Confé' Soirées - Deck blue, an Alsatian success story

  • Conference
Lerchenberg, 11 rue du Cercle, 68200 Mulhouse
Jean-Marie Schelcher will give a talk on the history of an Alsatian success story, Deck blue, and its inventor, Théodore Deck.

Théodore Deck is a famous ceramist from Guebwiller, where he was born in 1823. Trained as a stove maker, he soon developed a passion for the arts of fire and the chemistry of enamels. Moving to Paris, he set up his own workshop in 1856, where he revolutionized decorative ceramics. In particular, he invented the famous "Deck blue", a deep turquoise that became his signature color.

His works, which combine technical virtuosity and a poetic sense of color, left a lasting mark on the world of ceramics. He collaborated with numerous artists.
In 1887, he became director of the Manufacture nationale de Sèvres, but died four years later, in 1891. Today, his legacy is celebrated at the Musée Théodore Deck in Guebwiller.

The talk covers the work of Théodore Deck, but also draws a portrait of the relatively unknown private man, and recounts his many political and social commitments.

A refreshment bar will be open throughout the evening to quench your thirst.
