Somewhere in colonial India. - Dawn has broken and the flowering vines are already casting their shadows over the sacred stream, which flows calmly and darkly, as if awakened by the song of boisterous birds. There, under the thick dome of white jasmine and roses, reigns a profound peace: the wing of love has passed over the hearts of two lovers still asleep. She is the deified daughter of an untamed Brahmin who breathes vengeful hatred for Hindus. He is an officer in the victorious English army that is driving the gods from their age-old temples. All it takes is an exchange of glances, as fleeting as the tinkling of bells, to make them forget the world. But reality is about to disturb their dream.



Created in 1883 at the Opéra-Comique, Lakmé is rooted in Europe's fascination with the Orient and the context of the colonial wars. Léo Delibes sublimates the inexhaustible theme of impossible love through the heady sensuality of his music, which springs from the famous "Duo des fleurs" and the "Air des clochettes", in which coloratura soprano Sabine Devieilhe excels. Director Laurent Pelly has imagined a stripped-down, symbolic and stylized universe around his character, drawing on the traditions of Asian theater and shadow puppetry. Far from the exotic, this masterpiece of the French repertoire, directed by Guillaume Tourniaire, has a universal dimension.
