Wittenheim

Only 8 km from Mulhouse, in the heart of the Potash field, Wittenheim is ideally situated, both in a geographical and tourist point of view, half way between the Vosges Mountains, Germany and Switzerland.
There were 15,159 inhabitants in the 1999 population census. It is therefore the 4th biggest town in the Haut-Rhin (Upper Rhine) department. The town developed both industrially and demographically at the end of the 19th century, mainly because of the opening of Kullmann & Cie - a weaving and spinning factory - in 1888 and because of the potash adventure begun in 1912.
With 1,901 hectares and a dynamic population, Wittenheim has a lot to offer: a very diversified commercial environment as well as a particularly active associative social fabric - many sports and cultural events are offered all year long, with the town council's accord -, cultural facilities (hall dedicated to culture, cinema, reference library), sports facilities ( 3 sports halls) and quality tourist facilities (2 hotels and restaurants).
Because of its rich past, Wittenheim retains traces of both the feudal and seigniorial eras (feudal mound and Schoenensteinbach convent) as well as a symbolic heritage, recorded in the historic heritage inventory, linked to its industrial and mining history with the Sainte Barbe Church and its masterpiece, the paintings of Georges Desvallières and the Theodore shoring (a tower for mining - the overhead part of a mine shaft), the highest in all of Europe.
