A tramway in Mulhouse

The urban TramTrain network of the Mulhouse district is composed of 2 tramway lines (20 km and 38 stops) which will go through 5 municipalities around 2012. The SITRAM - Syndicat Intercommunal des Transports de l'Agglomération Mulhousienne (Intercommunal Transport Association for the Mulhouse District) is the organizing authority for its implementation. The first phase of 12 kilometres of this network has been brought into service since May 2006. It is now fully operational.

An efficiency approach

On time, fast, frequent, comfortable, modern and available to all, the TramTrain develops a more regular use of public transport. It limits nuisance, reduces transit automobile traffic in the city centre, thus creating a more efficient traffic : residents access, access to parking lots and to shops and services. Those are two of the main aims of the urban revalorisation approach adopted by the SITRAM for the Mulhouse district.

Facts and Figures for 2006

  • 2 lines
  • 12 kilometres
  • 24 stops
  • 27 tramway cars will be in use everyday from 5am to 12am (except on weekends)
  • a tramway will come every 6 to 8 minutes (in the daytime)

A prettier and greener district

More than 1,000 trees have been planted in the city alongside the two tramway lines. It also runs on grass in many neighbourhoods, more particularly on the east/west line (80% of the line covered in grass). Art works have also been put along the two lines. French artist Daniel Buren has already set his "arches" made of steel and bright colors along the east/west line.
