Ruelisheim, called Rueleischisheim in the past, is mentioned for the first time in a document which dates back to 837.
Agriculture is still the major activity of the village. But its closeness to Mulhouse, as well as the new developments in new neighbourhoods, allowed the village to go through a significant population increase.
Ruelisheim had only 771 inhabitants at the population census of the Liberation in 1945, but now there are three times as many inhabitants with a population of 2,692 according to the last population census.
Apart from traditional agricultural activities, the local population mainly worked in the potash mines. Nowadays, they are turning to specialized automobile businesses in the area.
