The very first written record of Rixheim dates back to 823 when the land was fought over by the local landowners, both noblemen and members of the clergy (the Murbachs, Teutonics, Habsburgs etc).
In 1797 Jean Zuber founded a wallpaper factory in the former commander´s residence of the Knights of the Teutonic Order.

Since 1986 the wallpaper factory has shared the premises with the town council and the magnificent Wallpaper Factory which opened in 1983.
The original Rixheim wallpaper manufacturers invented the now world-famous panoramic wallpaper in an attempt to escape from the confines of their little houses and dream of new horizons.
The fascinating collections illustrate scenes from history and sumptuous, often exotic landscapes. A truly unique museum.
