With a population of 3,500 inhabitants, Richwiller is a suburban town with a rural origin. At a height of 247 metres, this small town north-east of Mulhouse, is located near the potash field. It covers 555 hectares and is 4 km long and 1.5 km large.
Richwiller is a town with a longitudinal shape stretching from east to west. The "Strasbourg-Mulhouse" railway line runs through the town from north to south.
Its past goes back to the dawn of time, with the presence of Roman and Merovingian settlements. Some 14th century works found in the archives mention the name of "Reichweiler". The town was an unsettled fief of the Hapsburg family and the French Crown after the Wesphalia Treaty. Several noble families such as Joseph de Bergeret lived in the castle located at the eastern entrance of the town. The town council has officially adopted its coat of arms.
Nowadays, the industrial expansion in the north of the village is a great source for employment.
The 25 associations and the town council punctuate the inhabitants' spare time activities with the organisation of, among others, a summer solstice bonfire, a flea market, an open-air festival, an outdoor centre, a "youth special", cultural and environmental exhibitions, an old people's festival...
