Reiningue

Reiningue commemorates its Celtic origin - ran meaning house or village of the river - in the names of its localities. After the Gallo-Roman period, it belonged to the Duke Athic whose descendants gave the estate to the convent of the Mont Sainte Odile. Pope Léon IX's mother founded the Oelenberg monastery, which was under the authority of the Holy See.
An agricultural village, Reiningue began an industrial development in the early 19th century, with the discovery of potash in 1904 and the opening of the Joseph-Else Mine. It also attracts many tourists with its water sports on the nearby lake.
The River Doller, which flows into the River Ill, runs through the town of Reiningue with a population of 1,683 inhabitants.
The most famous monument of Reiningue is the Oelenberg monastery founded by Countess Hellwige of Eguisheim and entrusted to the Augustinians. Consecrated by the Alsatian Pope Léon IX, the convent was placed under the direct authority of the Holy See. It later became the property of the Jesuits from Freiburg im Breisgau (Germany) until 1773 when it was sold to the Freiburg university. In 1825, it was bought by the Trappists of Dardfeld in Westphalia. It is the only male monastery in the whole of Alsace.
