Kingersheim

Kingersheim was mentioned in som Alsatian documents as early as 1195, under the name of Kekingsem. But artifacts have been found proving that it already existed during the Neolithic, Roman and Merovingian eras.
The village, which had an agricultural tradition and had been getting poorer and poorer, suddenly developed in 1834 with the construction of a painted textile factory. It experienced great success from 1880 onward, mainly because of furniture textile printing which was exported worldwide. Kingersheim had its first population explosion in 1920. In the 1930s, the population greatly increased thanks to potash development. The 1960s represent the most noticeable growth.

Even if Kingersheim is not renowned for great tourist attractions during the summer months, it can however boast of having built a regional and national reputation on the vitality of its cultural life and its associations. All the same, the town conceals certain charms, such as the current House for Music, ancient farmstead from the 17th century which has been renovated to welcome young musicians, or the Virgin and Child sculpture in the Saint Adelphe Church back after a journey to the Louvre in Paris.

Inquiring people might not be attracted by old stones, but they will be captivated by the resourceful state of mind, the simplicity and the creativity that reigns in the town. The MOMIX festival that takes place every January is nationally renowned.
