EDF is France’s national electricity board, and Electropolis is its museum. In May 2003 a new 1,000 m² exhibition space opened charting the marvels of electricity throughout the 20th century with a combination of exhibition pieces, demonstrations, special effects and interactive displays. The EDF Electropolis Museum’s collections feature some 10,000 pieces ranging from batteries to hydraulic turbines and through 18th-century electrostatic machine, 20th-century electronic games and electrical appliances. The museum’s showpiece has to be the grande machine. This formidable machine, part of Mulhouse’s heritage, is a 170-tonne cast iron and steel mechanical and electrical monster that supplied the Mulhouse’s Dollfus Mieg & Compagnie with electricity from 1901 to 1947. After 20,000 hours of restoration work the machine is once again in full working order. In a 600-m²-exhibition space, visitors can also learn about the history of electricity through a fascinating exhibition using state-of-the-art technology. A great day out for all the family – a truly electrifying experience!
