The very first record of the village dates back to 796 when it was donated to the Murbach Abbey, but it was probably occupied as early as the Neolithic era. The abbey was to own property in Didenheim for centuries.
In the 17th century the village was handed over to the Besenval family who moved the age-old St Gall’s Fair from Gallenberg to Brunstatt, the seat of their barony. ( baronnie). The village was ravaged by wars throughout its history. A church was built in Gallenberg for the three surrounding villages; today there is a chapel which has become a popular destination for summer walks. The village is situated along the banks of the River Ill, an idyllic setting which has inspired a number of painters and is a popular place for walks.
The artist Marie Augustin Zwiller is a native of Didenheim and one of her paintings is on display in the parish church. The village has also dedicated a special room to its famous resident.
